DSLR/Mirrorless Field Setup Guide

Everything you need to deploy a DSLR or mirrorless camera for long-term timelapse in the field. From USB cabling to weatherproof enclosures.

Camera Control + Phone Charging

Use a USB-C multiport hub designed for Android devices in OTG host mode. It allows the device to control USB peripherals (such as a DSLR camera) while being charged at the same time via Power Delivery pass-through. Plug and play, no drivers required.

Best setup for modern cameras

For cameras that support charging via USB while shooting. This setup can survive power outages lasting several hours — the phone and camera run on their internal batteries, and instant WhatsApp alerts notify you when charging stops, giving you time to intervene before they run out.

Setup for older cameras

For cameras that cannot be charged via USB and require a dummy battery.

Weatherproof Case

Camtraptions Camera Housing — weatherproof enclosure for DSLR timelapse
Recommended

Camtraptions Camera Housing

Strong moulded plastic enclosure with weatherproof seals that completely protects your camera from rain and humidity. Fits any compact, mirrorless or DSLR camera up to the size of a Canon 1D X or Nikon D5.

  • Stacking Tube System — easily adapt to lenses of different lengths without sacrificing weatherproofing.
  • Quick-access back door — secured with two quick-release catches, lockable with cable ties or a padlock.
  • Slide-out base plate — access batteries, memory cards, and camera settings without removing the camera from the housing.
  • Dual tripod sockets — mount in landscape or portrait orientation; dual screws prevent the housing from twisting.
  • Adjustable peak — shades the lens from sun and rain, adjustable to stay out of frame.
  • Glass window — high-quality optical glass protects the lens without compromising image quality. Heated windows also available.
Reusable Silica Moisture-Absorbing Pack — keeps camera housing dry
Recommended

Reusable Silica Moisture-Absorbing Pack

Place one or more 100g desiccant packs inside your camera housing to protect equipment from humidity and condensation. A color-changing indicator turns pink when the pack is saturated and needs recharging.

Fully reusable — recharge in the microwave (5 min), oven (25 min at 150°C), or on a radiator (1–2 days). Use multiple packs for extended protection in high-humidity environments.
